Australia's 2026–27 Work and Holiday Visa ballot is open from June 4 to June 25, 2026. Only 1,000 places available for Indians. Here is everything you need to know before the window closes

If you are an Indian between the ages of 18 and 30, there is a visa window open right now that closes on June 25 2026, and most people do not know it exists.
Australia's Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462) have introduced a ballot system, a government-run electronic lottery specifically for applicants from India, China, and Vietnam. The Australian Government has officially opened the ballot registration for the 2026–27 program year, and it is open from June 4 to June 25, 2026.
This is not the standard Australia PR pathway. This is a separate opportunity for young Indians who want to live, work, and travel in Australia for up to 12 months with the option to extend. And the registration window is only three weeks long.
Here is everything you need to know accurately and completely before it closes.
Australia does not have an official visa lottery like the USA. However, the Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462) use a ballot to select who can apply. It is a random electronic draw run by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for applicants from India, China, and Vietnam. If selected, they get the chance to apply for the actual visa. The 2026–27 ballot is open from June 4 to June 25, 2026.
There is no official visa lottery offered by Australia in the traditional sense. But Australia gets far more applications for this visa than it has places available. To make the process fair, the Australian Government introduced a ballot system. Everyone who qualifies can register. After the window closes, a random electronic draw is held. Those selected get an invitation to apply for the actual visa.
It applies to passport holders from India, China, and Vietnam who want to apply for their first Subclass 462 Work and Holiday Visa. Because demand from these three countries is far higher than the available visa places, the government uses a random electronic draw to fairly select who gets invited to apply.
It is a two-step process:
Step 1 — Register for the ballot. Pay AUD 25 and submit your details during the open window (June 4–25, 2026).
Step 2 — Apply for the visa (only if selected). If you are picked in the draw, you have 28 days to submit your full visa application.
Being selected does not mean your visa is automatically approved. You still need to complete the full application correctly.
The 2026–27 ballot registration is open from June 4, 2026 to June 25, 2026. All dates are based on Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST). Applicants outside Australia should register early to avoid last-minute issues due to time zone differences. Missing this window means waiting until the next program year.
This window will not reopen. if you miss the June 25 deadline, you cannot register again for this program year. The next opportunity will be in 2027.
Indian passport holders aged 18–30, with at least 2 years of tertiary education or equivalent, a minimum IELTS score of 4.5 (or equivalent), a valid PAN card (Aadhaar is not accepted), and a verified email address are eligible to register for the 2026–27 Australia Work and Holiday Visa ballot.
To successfully register in the ballot, you must meet the following criteria at the time of registration: hold a valid passport from India, be between 18 and 30 years of age, have a verified email address, and hold a valid national identity card.
Important note for Indian applicants: to meet the 462 visa requirements for your national identity card, you must have a PAN card. Aadhaar cards are not accepted for registration.
Beyond the ballot registration, the full visa application — if selected — requires:
Only 1,000 visas are available each year for Indian applicants through the ballot system. In 2024, over 98,000 Indians registered for these 1,000 places, meaning the odds of selection were approximately 1 in 98.
The competition is significant. But the registration itself is open to everyone who qualifies, and registering is the only way to be in the draw.
The ballot is purely random. The ballot is purely random and your academic scores or financial strength do not influence selection. What matters is registering on time with the correct details and a valid national identity document.
If selected and approved, the Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462) allows you to:
This is not a tourist visa. It is a legitimate work authorisation that allows young Indians to build savings, gain international work experience, and explore Australia!
The most common mistakes include using Aadhaar instead of PAN card for Indian applicants; entering passport, PAN, email, or personal details incorrectly in ImmiAccount Australia; missing the 28-day deadline to apply after selection; applying from inside Australia after selection; and trusting unofficial links or agents promising guaranteed selection.
One critical point: selection in the ballot is not visa approval. It is an invitation to apply. The full visa application with all documents, health checks, and character requirements must still be submitted correctly within 28 days of selection.
The Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462) is designed for young Indians who want to experience living and working abroad before committing to a long-term immigration pathway. It is not a PR route, and it is not a pathway to permanent residency in itself.
If your goal is permanent residency in Australia, the points-based skilled migration pathways Subclasses 189, 190, and 491 remain the primary route and are entirely separate from this ballot.
However, for those aged 18–30 who want to spend 12 months in Australia building experience, savings, and international exposure the Subclass 462 ballot is a legitimate, government-run opportunity that is open right now, for a limited time.
If you are in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, or anywhere across India the registration is entirely online through ImmiAccount Australia. There is no in-person process required at this stage.
Winny Global is India's first publicly listed Global Mobility institution — MARA-registered, RCIC-accredited, and trusted by 6.5 million+ people across 100+ countries for over 45 years.
Whether you are registering for the Subclass 462 ballot or planning a longer-term pathway to Australia through skilled migration, our team in Ahmedabad and across India guides you through every step — correctly, completely, and without surprises.
We ensure your ballot registration is submitted accurately, your documents match exactly, and if selected your visa application is prepared to the highest standard within the 28-day deadline.
